COURSE DESCRIPTION
Altruism is a trait that runs deep in the hearts of clinicians. This tendency for compassion often translates beautifully into the healthcare provider. However, to truly have a healing practice that addresses the patient in their entirety, it is absolutely critical to be well-informed. Within the last decade there has been a groundswell of momentum toward diversity and inclusion and many have taken active steps to demonstrate this to their patients. Nevertheless, it can remain a daunting task when one is uncertain where to begin with the ever-evolving terminology. 

This six-hour virtual course is filled to the brim with clinically relevant and readily applicable information. If you are striving to reframe your understanding of sex, gender, and have an overall greater understanding of the tangible healthcare inequities faced by the LGBTQ+ community, this course was designed for you.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Provide compassionate, well-informed, healing care to address patients in their entirety.
• Recognize that both gender and biological sex are on a spectrum.
• Appreciate the impact of a binary approach to education for intersex patients.
• Comfortably and sensitively communicate using the most recent language pertaining to LGBTQ+ individuals.
• Practice professional accountability by sharing your newly-acquired understanding of the social, economic, and psychological implications on health.
• Confidently answer questions regarding caring for LGBTQ+ patients or direct these patients to relevant resources.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
An orthopedic and pelvic floor physical therapist, Brianna Durand is the founder and owner of Empower Physiotherapy in Seattle, where she provides affirming care to the LGBTQ+ community. As a competitive powerlifter, Dr. Durand also specializes in working with athletes. Dr. Durand serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute and the PIMA Medical Institute PTA program. She received her DPT from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX, and a bachelor of science with concentrations in kinesiology and athletic medicine from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Occupational burnout, which can affect individuals in many occupations, occurs in response to chronic interpersonal job related stress. Healthcare professionals, including physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, are especially at risk for burnout development. This presentation will include research on burnout in physical therapy, and potential strategies for decreasing burnout in this population.

Burnout can result in increased levels of depression, absenteeism, and substance abuse, as well as decreased quality of patient care. These negative ramifications can be detrimental to the healthcare practitioner, their patients, their professional license, and to the institutions in which they work. 

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Recognize the warning signs and potential implications of occupational burnout within physical therapy practitioners.
• Identify the results of current research on physical therapist and physical therapist assistant burnout.
• Describe potential strategies to decrease occupational burnout among physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Justin Berry is Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks, Minnesota and is an adjunct faculty member in the tDPT Program at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. He performs research on a variety of physical therapy topics, including having articles published on physical therapy burnout, job satisfaction, productivity, and DPT student loan debt. In addition to peer reviewed articles, he has provided more than a dozen research presentations, presented nearly two dozen research posters, and has taught dozens of continuing education courses at state and national conferences. He received his DPT and PhD from the University of North Dakota, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He also earned a master of science in education from Bermidji State University in Bermidji, Minnesota.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Are you trying to implement a new evidence-based practice technique in your clinic? Do you want to learn strategies to enhance your ability to plan and implement projects? Knowledge translation is the dynamic and iterative process of moving evidence into practice to improve healthcare. This workshop will educate participants to use knowledge translation techniques to plan, implement, and evaluate projects to improve evidence-based practices and enhance patient outcomes.

Effective knowledge translation includes assessment of barriers to using evidence, tailoring strategies to overcome the barriers, and the use of theoretical frameworks. The Knowledge-to-Action framework is the most widely used framework in knowledge translation and rehabilitation and it outlines steps in the iterative process of implementation of evidence. Implementing new evidence may require de-implementation of techniques with less evidence and, during this course, we will also discuss strategies for de-implementation. Case examples will be provided, and attendees are invited to discuss their unique projects and receive feedback from the presenter.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Define the practice and science of knowledge translation and its components.
• Integrate the knowledge translation framework into a project.
• Create an action plan to implement an evidence-based practice.    
• Identify strategies to facilitate knowledge translation.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Wendy Romney is an assistant professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, teaching courses on physical therapy examination including use of outcome measures and treatment of patients with neurological disease and dysfunction and medically complex issues. She continues to practice at Gaylord Specialty HealthCare, in Wallingford, CT, treating patients with neurologic disease and medically complex issues. She is the director of practice for the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy, a member of the SCI EDGE workgroup and a member of KT Taskforce for the Core Set of Outcome Measures CPG for the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy. Dr. Romney earned her PhD from Rutgers University in Health Sciences, in Newark, NJ with a focus on knowledge translation and her research is focused on improving the use of outcome measures in PT practice. She received her DPT, an MS in physical therapy, and a BS in clinical science from Ithaca College, in Ithaca, NY.
